刘炜1980年1月15日出生于上海，他职业生涯大部分时间都是在上海男篮效力，并在2001-02赛季联手姚明帮助上海男篮夺得CBA联赛冠军。
在国家队层面，刘炜先后跟随中国男篮参加了2004年雅典奥运会、2008年北京奥运会、2012年伦敦奥运会，此外他还随中国男篮参加了3届世锦赛和4届亚锦赛。
2024年6月，刘炜出任新疆男篮主教练。
